Rector of Holy Trinity Seminary Meets with an Orthodox Canonist from Finland

On October 7, Archimandrite Luke, Rector of the Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary, together with seminary professors, Deacon Andrei Psarev and Vitaly Permiakov, met with Jelisei Heikkilä, an Orthodox canon law scholar from Finland.  This coming January Jelisei will be defending his doctoral dissertation at the University of Helsinki, which focuses on the issues of marriage law at the All-Russian Local Council in 1917-18.  Jelisei is currently working on his thesis in Utica, NY, a city close to the monastery.  On September 24, he led a seminar on the topic of his dissertation for the fifth-year students of our Seminary.  Jelisei is a member of the Society on the Canon Law of the Eastern Churches at the University of Vienna and previously met with Fr Andrei Psarev at this society’s biannual conferences in Athens and Bari.  In the course of the conversation with Mr Heikkilä, Fr Luke emphasized that the family institution is a cornerstone of the Church, and thus needs support and protection. Fr Luke was especially interested in the pre-revolutionaryl position of the Church and government towards divorce for clergy and laymen, as well as the question of twice married clergy.  Dr Permiakov (instructor of Liturgical Theology and Dogmatics) pointed out some dogmatic and liturgical parallels, relevant for the issues that were discussed.  We wish Jelisei God’s help and success in his work, and we hope that in the future he will again take part in the life of our Seminary.
